Building Refurbishment

Location: Immingham

Area of expertise: Manufacturing Storage and Warehousing

Challenge

One of the world’s leading producers of high-quality titanium products Took over manufacturing operations from an original operator and we continue to enjoy an excellent working relationship with this particular client.

The client approached us as the external condition of one of their process buildings was in need of repair, however it was imperative that the process was to remain operational throughout the repairs.

Solution

With knowledge of similar plants in the UK, we worked collaboratively with the client to establish a practical and pragmatic approach to the problem.

Upon inspection of the external condition of the building we found that the steelwork was badly corroded due to the very humid conditions generated by the process. The roof steelwork, purlins and cladding plus side framing, sheeting rails and cladding above operating floor level all required replacement.

The building main frame was a portalised structure and the large portal rafters had lost a significant amount of material. There were also six large filters on the operating floor that required future removal for maintenance.

In our approach, we:

  • Re-designed the roof incorporating a removable roof hatch over each of the filters
  • Re-designed the portal rafters to form the top chord of a roof truss to save expensive site repairs.

Results

Not only did the plant remain online during the project work, we took the opportunity to introduce additional maintenance features into the building envelope.

Our expertise and experience ensured that there was no contamination of product from building structure/ refurbishment materials and the possible risk of plant shutdown was avoided.
